The football world held its breath twice in four days — and now, at last, there are answers. Jamal Musiala, Bayern Munich's 23-year-old German winger and one of the most gifted attacking players of his generation, has confirmed that he has been diagnosed with a neurological condition after collapsing on the pitch during two successive pre-season friendlies. Two Collapses, Four Days Apart
The first incident occurred during Bayern Munich's Telekom Cup encounter with RB Leipzig, when Musiala collapsed on the pitch late in the second half, just moments after the 23-year-old had found the back of the net to help secure a 3-1 victory for the Bavarian giants at the Allianz Arena. The forward, who had been introduced as a second-half substitute, began to look visibly disoriented and unsteady on his feet as the game reached its closing stages. Recognising the immediate danger, new signing Ismael Saibari acted instinctively to prevent his teammate from hitting the ground.

Then, on Tuesday evening — just four days later — it happened again. Musiala collapsed just minutes after coming off the bench in a friendly between Bayern Munich and Heidenheim. The midfielder was substituted into the match in the 61st minute but went down off the ball shortly afterwards, prompting the medical team to rush onto the pitch. Musiala eventually managed to walk off the field under his own power, appearing dazed. This alarming event unfolded despite the player passing medical examinations before the game.
The Diagnosis: Absence Seizures
With the football world gripped by concern, Musiala addressed his situation directly. "I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary — but treatable — absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the kind of moments that occurred recently, such as during the match against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim."
Absence seizures are something that can lead to brief losses of awareness or complete stops in activity, like Musiala's collapse, generally lasting seconds. There is medication that can be taken for prevention, but it could be something that becomes part of the German's life moving forward.
"I'm receiving excellent medical treatment and am very optimistic," Musiala said, seeking to reassure supporters. He added: "I am incredibly grateful for your messages and your support. I understand that many of you are worried." The Germany international was emphatic that there is no long-term danger to his health — a message he delivered with the composure of a young man determined not to allow the diagnosis to define him.
A Body Already Tested
The two collapses are the latest chapter in what has been a deeply difficult twelve months for Musiala physically. The Germany international previously missed six months of last season with a broken ankle, but returned to start three of four World Cup matches. The ankle injury was sustained during the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinal against PSG in Atlanta in July 2025, when Musiala collided with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma — suffering a fibula fracture with a broken and dislocated ankle in the process.
That he returned at all to feature prominently at the 2026 World Cup — one of the tournament's standout individual performers in Germany's campaign before their painful Round of 32 exit against Paraguay — spoke volumes about his determination and resilience. Now he faces a different kind of challenge: managing a neurological condition while maintaining his place among the elite of European football.
What It Means for Bayern
The timing could not be more pressing. Bayern Munich face Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup on Saturday before the Bundesliga makes a full return on August 28, with the Bavarians hosting Stuttgart. Musiala's availability for those opening competitive fixtures is now a significant question mark — and for new head coach Vincent Kompany, who will need his most gifted attacker firing if Bayern are to mount a credible Champions League challenge, the uncertainty is deeply unwelcome.
For now, the message from Musiala himself is one of calm, optimism and gratitude. He is receiving treatment. He is well. And knowing the character of a player who came back from a fractured ankle to play in a World Cup, few would bet against him returning to the pitch stronger than ever.
