⚽ Defending Champions Sundowns eliminated

Shocking, disgraceful, disappointing. This is just a flurry of words that can describe Masandlwana's elimination from this year's CAF Champions League's group stages.

How can it be that Africa's richest club (Let's not kidd ourselves, the ownership literally swims in cash), could lose to a team founded in 2018 (albeit with loads of cash as well)?

Cristovao Paciencia “Mabululu” was the difference between the 2 teams as his equalizer propelled the Angolans towards the next phase of Africa's top club competition.

The 0-0 draw in Benguela last week and the away goal this week were enough to see the Sky fall for South Africa's Brazilians.

Congratulations, Viliete!

⚽ Getting closer to the group stages

Yanga Mean Business

Young Africans served an emphatic statement of intent on Saturday as they dismantled Madagascar’s CFFA 4-0 in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round, all but booking their place in the group stage before the return fixture has even been played.

The Tanzanian giants, affectionately known as Yanga, were clinical from the opening exchanges, with Cheikh Touré breaking the deadlock just before the interval to send the visitors into the break with a commanding lead. CFFA — appearing on African football’s biggest club stage — struggled to contain a Yanga side that grew in authority with every passing minute.

The four-goal cushion means the return leg in Dar es Salaam is a formality rather than a contest. CFFA face an almost impossible mission to overturn the deficit, and barring a collapse of extraordinary proportions, Young Africans will march into the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Stalemate in Lubumbashi

TP Mazembe’s hopes of securing a commanding first-leg advantage were frustrated on Saturday as Tunisia’s Club Africain left Lubumbashi with a hard-earned 1-1 draw, keeping the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie delicately poised.

It is a result that will sting Mazembe. Playing at home, against opponents they would expect to overcome over two legs, a draw feels like an opportunity missed. The tie now shifts to Radès, where Club Africain will have the backing of their own crowd at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi on 25 October.

Moremi’s Late Strike Hands Pirates the Edge in Windhoek

A single moment of quality from Tshepang Moremi was enough to give Orlando Pirates a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Namibian champions African Stars on Saturday, as the Buccaneers stole away from Windhoek with a precious first-leg advantage in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League second preliminary round.

The 78th-minute strike was as timely as it was crucial. One goal away from home changes everything in a two-legged tie, and Pirates knew it. African Stars threw what they could at the visitors in the closing stages but could not find the equaliser their efforts perhaps deserved. When the final whistle came, the Buccaneers had what they came for.

It is far from over. The return leg at Pirates’ fortress in South Africa will tell the real story, and African Stars — who have nothing to lose and everything to gain — will arrive knowing a single goal could swing the tie dramatically. But on the balance of this first meeting, Orlando Pirates hold the upper hand.
